Transfer maternity and paternity leave to grandparents

The Institute for Public Policy Research’s report “The sandwich generation: Older women balancing work and care” recommends an additional change to the government’s newest parental leave policies.  New parents should be allowed to transfer some of their leave to their own parents, the new child’s grandparents.

Dalia Ben-Galim, IPPR associate director, said this “would help more women in their fifties to stay in work [because] women over 50 find it very difficult to get back into work [after a career break] and are too often forced into early retirement” if/when they take time away from a job to help with a new grandchild.
