With the Campaign to End Loneliness estimating that nearly 2.5 million people over the age of 60 do not know where to go for help if they are feeling lonely, the Royal Voluntary Service’s Good Neighbours programme works with local GPs to identify older residents who might need a bit of occasional help. Research shows that those experiencing loneliness are more likely to use accident and emergency services, visit their GP and have a higher use of medication. Good Neighbour volunteers can help with a variety of tasks, such as picking up repeat prescriptions, as well as provide valuable company and friendship.
